Mean Arterial Pressure Calculator
Calculate Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) to assess organ perfusion pressure from systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.
About Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)
MAP represents average arterial perfusion pressure during a complete cardiac cycle. It indicates whether blood flow is adequate to sustain vital organ perfusion.
Formula
MAP = [ Systolic BP + (2 × Diastolic BP) ] / 3
Diastolic pressure is weighted double because the ventricles spend roughly two-thirds of the resting cardiac cycle in diastole.
Worked Example
For a blood pressure of 120/80 mmHg:
MAP = [120 + (2 × 80)] / 3 = 280 / 3 = 93.3 mmHg
Frequently Asked Questions
What is normal Mean Arterial Pressure?
A normal MAP typically falls between 70 and 100 mmHg in healthy adults at rest.
What is the minimum MAP for vital organ perfusion?
A minimum MAP of 65 mmHg is clinically required to sustain adequate cerebral and renal capillary perfusion.
What happens if MAP drops below 60 mmHg?
MAP below 60 mmHg indicates hypoperfusion, which can lead to cellular ischemia, acute tubular necrosis, and hypovolemic or septic shock.
Does MAP correlate with stroke risk?
Yes. Sustained elevated MAP (> 110 mmHg) increases cardiac workload, arterial remodeling, and hemorrhagic stroke risk.
